About the jobSummary:The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI or the Institute) seeks a full-time Program Officer to help implement NDI's programs in Slovakia and across the Visegrad region, which aim to promote political participation and civic engagement of minorities through targeted in-country assistance and cross-border learning and exchange. The position is based in NDI's office in Bratislava (hybrid) and might require travel around Central Europe including, but not limited to, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. This is a contractual position and contingent upon available funding.Background:The Institute is a nonprofit and non-partisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness, and accountability in government. NDI has more than 30 years of global experience supporting complex democratic transitions.NDI will provide all necessary equipment, including a laptop. The position will be overseen by NDI's Senior Program Manager in Slovakia and program team in Washington D.C..Primary Responsibilities:
  • Implement in-country components of various programs in Slovakia in cooperation with NDI's partner organizations, civic organizations, political parties, elected officials, local governments, and legislatures;
  • Provide general administrative support to the programs, including management of the allocated program budget and spending and preparation of financial reconciliations;
  • Organize the logistical aspects of training events and conferences in Slovakia, with input from the Senior Program Manager in Slovakia and DC-based staff;
  • Regularly liaise with other regional and Washington, D.C.-based staff on program implementation and reporting;
  • Represent NDI at conferences and meetings with partners, donors, and members of the international community, as needed;
  • Monitor political developments in Slovakia;
  • Monitor programs' results.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in international relations, social science, or a related subject from an accredited university, Master's degree preferred;
  • Experience working with minority civic groups and populations that are marginalized and underrepresented in politics and/or experience with community organizing, advocacy, or other forms of civic or political activism;
  • Familiarity with the political landscape in Slovakia;
  • Excellent organizational and administrative abilities with strong attention to detail and the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Slovak;Proficiency in Microsoft Word applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and Google applications (Docs, Drive, Spreadsheets, Presentation);
  • Willingness to travel and work non-traditional hours, as needed;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team;
  • Flexibility and reliability
